"The more I read and hear re the Falklands the more remarkable it was that we ever won"

There was a documentary on Channel 4 over the weekend, that's been on before, called Falklands War: The Untold Story. In it, it explains how lucky we were everything went to plan.

Well that was the thing... hardly anything went to plan... and we still pulled it off... losing the Atlantic conveyor... not having to take Goose Green (Thatcher wanting a morale boosting victory rather than any tactical sense... mainly due to our Navy getting shredded by Exocets)... Sir Gallahad a sitting duck in Carlos waters... Rapiers SAM's being a piece of crap and giving fuck all protection from the Argie AF... thank god for the Sea Harriers that's all I can say

Re: Tevez refused to learn English because of the Falklands War.
A lunatic dictator with an unpopular party thinking a good old war would distract a jingoistic nationalist public from the fact that they had completely fucked up the economy, just before election time.

And the Argentines weren't any better really.

Oh, and Tevez is one of my personal top five (maybe even top three) players to ever wear our shirt.

Remember what you like but he DID virtually keep us up on his own.

He WAS too thick to learn English but who the fuck cares when a player is THAT good?

Strictly speaking we were thousands of miles from home and they were just round the corner. However sinking the Belgrano meant they really only had the jets and land launched misiles.

The war demonstrated the vulnerability of large surface vessels to air attack and the superiority of professional over conscript armies, especially when supported and supplied by a combination of air, sea and electronic ops. The Vulcan raid on the Port Stanley airstrip, the skill of the Argie pilots and the Paras' march in the final land phase all illustrate how much the UK armed forces learnt from this war.

Re: Tevez refused to learn English because of the Falklands War.
Oh, the British had a LOT more hi-tech stuff they wanted to take and couldn't.

The navy, in particular, had been trained on a huge amount of tech they left behind. Then the lost key equipment to air strikes.

My uncle was the para who fought out there - and my father-in-law was a senior naval officer back here at the time, working alongside Bramall (who, I think, co-ordinated it all: is that right?).

You just said they wanted to use new tech? Our boats were mostly high tech theirs was a WW2 vintage. They used French exocets, very high tech. In the end old school soldering won but the Brits need a war ever few yearssouthbankbornnbred 7:23 Thu May 18

Obviously a very good player but I always felt he got a bit too much credit for our “Great Escape” season.

The likes of Rob Green & Bobby Zamora played just as big of a part in keeping us up.

As for the language/English thing his morals and family values obviously weren’t strong enough to stop him playing in England for 7 years and being paid fortunes from 3 different English clubs.

True bet let’s face it they were never going to win - Britain has been at war pretty much contstantly for centuries whereas I don’t think argues have ever even fought a proper war? They were fucked as soon as they invaded

Re: Tevez refused to learn English because of the Falklands War.
Bit of historical revisionism all round from Tevez, there.

Also, a bit from WHOers, too. The Falklands, agree with the war or not, was NOT an excuse to use a load of new tech.

The whole campaign to re-take the islands was surprisingly low-tech because of the sheer distance involved. It took fucking ages to get troops and equipment over there - and there wasn't enough room on the ships for much of the equipment the UK wanted to take.

In addition, a few Argentinean air strikes on UK boats ahead of the ground "invasion" put paid to some of the modern equipment - so the ground troops went old skool and just marched the fuck onto the islands and swept across it using some proper WW2 tactics. Hence, mental events such as Corporal Jones' head-on attack.

My uncle was a para at the time and still recants tales of how they took back the islands. I'm sure he exaggerates for effect, but anybody listening to him would think they took back the Falklands using a tin opener and the spirit of jazz.

Re: Tevez refused to learn English because of the Falklands War.
Let’s be honest if Carlos had moral principles he would have refused to play in the PL if the Falklands war is so meaningful to him, could of made plenty of money in Europe but NO the PL would pay more.

He just couldn’t learn English and now using this as an excuse why.

Fuck Off, LOL

"lets face it the Falklands was just a big training exercise to check out a few new technologies"

So there are similarities between the Falklands and Ukraine?

Yup... both evil dictators invading places they should never have ... same result...

The more I read and hear re the Falklands the more remarkable it was that we ever won... some serious mistakes made... and we got fuck lucky that the idiot Argies invaded when they did... a few years down the line we could have never assembled the task force with our carriers mothballed...

Fair enough.

For what reason has Jamie Carragher refused to learn it though?
